DELPHI

Delphi is located about one hundred miles northwest of Athens.  Its complex includes the Temple of Apollo where the oracle of Delphi sat, the Corycian Cave, and the Castalian Spring nestled on the forested slopes of Mt. Parnassus.  The Temple was the home of the Pythia, who, seated on a tripod above a deep crevasse, would pronounce her prophecies while the priests wrote them down and translated them to the people.  Delphi was the meeting place of two eagles, released by Zeus and sent in opposite directions. Where they met indicated the center of the earth and this decorated Omphathalos (Navel of the Earth - whose prestige extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hellenic World) marked the exact spot.

After the Acropolis, Delphi is the most popular archaeological site in Greece.
