New England Travel Diary Who Feeds the Whales? Whales are famous for their lack of willingness to be
tamed. They are highly intelligent, warm blooded mammals. They'll talk to you,
sing for you, follow you and occasionally protect you but they probably will not obey you.
The great tale of "Moby Dick" tells of the fierce resistance that a whale
is ready to give to an attacker. The Bible calls them by the strange word Leviathan
that makes me think of some sort of sea monster with huge jaws lined with teeth.
Yet, in Psalm 104 we see a different picture. Whales are placed in the sea by God so
that they can play! A humpback whale eats $20,000 worth of shrimp every day and all
they are required to do is to play. A pod of 50 Pilot whales sweeps through the sea
consuming more food than many fishing boats can take in a week. With that kind of a
grocery budget, who feeds them? It looks like God likes them so much that he is
willing to provide them with all they can eat and they are supposed to have fun.
