More Museums

There are many great museums in Paris.  We especially enjoyed the Museum d'Orsay, Museum Rodin and Museum Picasso.

The Museum d'Orsay is located on the banks of the Seine River in a huge, converted train station that has a beautiful iron and glass ceiling.   It houses one of the world's great art collections from the second half of the 19th century.  The collection includes Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gaugin and many others.

Monet's Gare Lazare exhibit was in the museum when we went.  It was a real bonus on our half day stay.   We visited all of the exhibit areas.  We also canvassed the bookstore going and coming.  Before we left we enjoyed the tearoom on the upper level.  This was my favorite museum except for maybe the Louvre, Rodin and Picasso Museums.

The Museum Rodin contains all of the major works of Auguste Rodin, France's most famous sculptor.  The museum is only four blocks from the Museum d'Orsay and is housed in the 18th century Hotel Biron.   My two favorite pieces are The Thinker, on the right inside the entrance and The Gates of Hell located on the left inside the entrance.

Awesome, impressive, stunning and exceptional are the feelings that we experienced at the Museum Rodin.

We took the Metro across town to the Museum Picasso which is located in the heart of the Marais District.  The museum is housed in the Hotel Sale which was built in the mid-1600's.  Picasso's work in this museum is from his own collection and is arranged to give a broad overview of his creative work.  There are 203 paintings, 158 sculptures, and 3,000 prints and drawings.  We were impressed with Picasso's work across a broad spectrum of art.   The museum is well organized and quite delightful.
